On such a full sea are we now afloat,
And we must take the current when it serves,
Or lose our ventures.

Change

Times are strange. The world is broke. In every possible way. But in times like these interesting things happen. When we feel a collective pain, despondency and dejection that’s when things start changing. Or rather, that’s when they should start changing, it’s happened in the past, but it might not happen now. Things feel different. This time round the exasperation is in danger of becoming a hopeless lethargy.

Brutus is about encouraging a small change, not a world wide revolution. It’s not about politics, it’s about feelings and passion. It’s about recognising that where we live is special and important, that we are surrounded by incredibly creative, passionate people and that we all need to encourage a new wave of creativity and of FUN.

Here we are, in Norwich, the strangest of cities, but also the most unique. We are a stones throw away from London, we know this, but they don't seem to have noticed. We need to be thankful as much as begrudging of our sometimes comical status. People leave us alone whether we like it or not. This means that what we do can be truly unique, it can be exciting and inclusive and it can push boundaries that appear invisible to other people in bigger cities.

Let’s stop thinking so much and start feeling, or rather let’s think on our feet. Let’s encourage a visceral and instinctive reaction. Let’s get talking again, let’s get excited again and let’s start something new.

Brutus aims to be many things, to adapt and grow as time goes on. For now, inspired by the wonderful Norwich based music zine (and ever expanding empire!) Gravy, Brutus is a blog and a zine. The first issue is due out very soon. But Brutus needs YOU to fill its pages.

The first issue will be about ‘CHANGE in Norwich’. Simple and encompassing. Please feel free to submit photographs, prose, poetry, lists, links to video pieces, paintings, drawings, scribbles, newspaper articles, even your reaction to this blog if you like. Your submission can be do with the consciousness of the city or something more personal, as long as the inspiration came as a result of Norwich or being in Norwich.

Support your scene; art, music, film, literature. Check out those invites you keep getting on facebook, pick-up those flyers you keep seeing lying around. Hell, maybe even start something new if you feel that you’re not being represented. Let’s get this thing started...

Brutus: Positive Disquiet.
